The first Saturday in June turned out to be a marvelous day at FOLSOM FIBER CAMP. A beautiful day in the country greeted 26 seasoned and newbie spinners as they arrived early in the morning.
There was a plethora of spinning wheels with experienced spinners at their helm. Everyone was excited and poised to share knowledge and hands on expertise with a wonderful group of drop spindle virgins.
New spinners received a handy spinner’s kit, comprised of a large, colorful enviro sac for carrying their spinning gear, a drop spindle, several bundles of roving and some instruction/reference materials.
Guild members, Debbie Bland, Liz Crawley, and Kathy Williams-Gilfillan, did a wonderful job demonstrating and teaching drop spindle techniques. There was plenty of encouragement and praises all around for those venturing into the world of spinning for the first time. Click this link to view pictures. At lunchtime, the group found comfortable spots around the grounds to break bread with fiber minded friends. Current members and prospective members came together on rustic swings and picnic tables, under the shade of beautiful Live Oak trees to partake of brown bag lunches and ice cold drinks. Gradually, the clunk, and thud of dropping spindles waned and as the day wore on, first skeins were being made and proudly shown off. Those with interest in spinning wheels had the opportunity to see many wheels and in several cases seized a chance to try a little treadling.
The day closed with several spinning related door prizes presented to 6 lucky attendees. Smiles of pride and achievement were everywhere. By all accounts, it was a great day!! Y’all come back anytime!!
